Review-CHERNOBYL
(This is after a very long time since I wrote my last post, but this year was not regular academical year but I started something more sustainable in life by choosing to pursue to become a Charted Accountant.
But when I was thinking what should I publish next, there were many topics but then I did not got a continuous stretch to research and actually write something about. I saw CHERNOBYL long back and thought why not to write amateur review on it. I drafted it in segments as and when time permitted.
Hope you like it and do watch this series...!!!!)
What do you do when a volcano has just exploded with its full capacity and you are just miles away, every elder and authorities around you tell you that it was just a firecracker accidently burst but some truthseekers around you try to find answers as to what has happened and help you find solutions to minimize the post destruction and you reward them by curtailing their existence itself. This becomes more insane if we come to know that the volcanic eruption was a result of compounded misinformation lied by the state which could had been stop if someone would've told the truth. A Primetime Emmy award winning limited web series by HBO. It tells us about World's Biggest Nuclear disaster due to RBMK reactor explosion at Chernobyl in Russia (then Soviet Union) which concerned the world. It's written and created by Craig Mazin directed by Johan Renck . No wonder this series has an IMDb rating of 9.5/10 and 97% liking by the viewers.
The most important character is Prof. Legasov(Jared Harris),a brilliant nuclear physicist who is our hero and actually it is due to him the world we see today exist in very apt conditions. Soviet representative Boris Sherbina(Stellan Skarsgård) a typical bureaucrat who at first like the state grossly underestimates the blast but drastically becomes so much rightful that he stands firm with Prof. Legasov. The third most important character is played by Emily Watson named Comrade Ullana Khomyuk who represents hundreds of scientists which helped and was a bit smarter than Prof. Legasov to understand and find best possible solution to curb the same. All in all this story revolves around these three characters and their attempt to fight the disaster and stand with conviction against State sponsored lies. There is a line in of one of the scenes of the poem- "The Great Bitter land I am born to defend" written by Konstantin Simonov which Craig adamantly chose to put it in the series to depict the psychology of then citizens of USSR, including all the scientists, the miners(who you come to know lately in the series), the divers and many unsung heroes. Even today the town of Pripyat and adjacent areas are heavily protected as it is still radioactive and has become a tourist place.
As far as the difference between reality and the extent of dramatization, Craig claims that there is almost none with some obvious changes, every important line in the series was actually been said . Though the event took place in USSR ,there is no Russian language in the series it is wholly English the purpose being to tell the story as simple as possible and to enlighten about the event and not perfect depiction. After the series and you're curious enough do hear the podcast where Peter Sagal and Craig Mazin talk about each episode, the truth and some behind the scenes of Chernobyl.
The below pictures are actually taken during the event and I found it on Twitter and Google-
