The Chestnut Man

(Spoiler Alert)

There are a few type of films/ series which are shot so seamless and with a sense to deeply enhance the story which fill my hunger for visually appealing content. The chestnut man is a 6 episode long psychological crime drama with such simple yet fulfilling cinematography.

Our lead Thulin is a detective and is about to transfer to mediocre dept. in her police force, in order to take better care of her daughter and is suddenly handed over a case of mysterious killing of a mom of an autistic boy. She is assigned with Hess, who is transferred back from interpol due to his weak mental history. Initially doomed Hess takes greater interest in the case and this leads to reopening of another high profile case. Gradually the story moves ahead giving no clue what's so ever over who might be the killer. The basic of any psycho killer is that it believes in a theory because it's brainwashed about the same or due to an incident/experience in the past which affects it's mental state so deeply that it decides to justify his theory by killing people. Our story was very much inline with this logic. The struggle of a single detective mom in juggling between meeting her daughter's expectations and solving a demanding case is aptly portrayed by the actress. The daughters stance about her mother's situation is mature and admiring. Hess on the other side has had a traumatic past but his queer unorthodox approach to the case is just what helps to solve it. The entire series keeps the relationship between Thulin and Hess optimistically platonic and this doesn't distract us from the case all the more enhances the story. We see a lot of drone shot with single or very less biotic factors which I interpreted to the scattered and unattached facts of the case. The cinematography gave me HBO production vibes in a way that director took time with scenes and not making hour long cliffhanger prone commercialized episodes. However I think the series could have done more on thriller part with the sound, scenes or editing unless the director intended not to do .

All in all, it's a good watch for folks who are interested in psycho crime stuff but don't want it to be intimidating enough that may, you know, result in dreary dreams.
